Coldfair Green Primary School ended the Spring Term with a special literacy week. The school organised a series of events and workshops for the pupils, the core aim of which was both to develop pupils' skills in and to encourage an enthusiasm for reading and writing.

ESDFAS was delighted to support this project and the Society's donation contributed substantially to funding the children's book illustrator, Gillian McClure, to work for a day in the school. The aim of this day was to encourage the development of pupils' skills through a combination imaginative      writing and drawing.

Gillian McClure & Annie Minton

Gillian McClure worked with each class in the school and at the end of the day, presented prizes and held a question and answer session with the pupils. In one of the workshops, tackled with huge enthusiasm by the 8year olds, pupils were read the story of the 'Selkie' - about a young girl who is half-human and half-seal. However, they were not told the outcome but asked to write their own ending and then to illustrate it. Pupils were promised that they would hear the book's ending on return to school on Monday - creating too much suspense for one pupil who decided to buy the book to read over the week-end!
